Ambien(Zolpidem) is a sedative, also called a hypnotic. It affects chemicals in the brain that may be unbalanced in people with sleep problems (insomnia). Ambien(immediate-release tablet), is in a class of drugs called sedativehypnotics. They work by slowing the activity in your brain, which allows for a state of sleep.

Zolpidem is used to treat insomnia. The immediaterelease forms of zolpidem are Ambien, Intermezzo, Edluar, and Zolpimist, which are used to help you fall asleep. The extended-release form of zolpidem is Ambien CR, which has a first layer that dissolves quickly to help you fall asleep, and a second layer that dissolves slowly to help you stay asleep.

Ambien, Edluar, and Zolpimist are used to help you fall asleep when you first go to bed. Intermezzo, is used to help you fall back to sleep if you wake up in the middle of the night and then have trouble sleeping.

Sanofi-Aventis makes Ambien, which was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1992.

Do not take Ambien if you have consumed alcohol during the day or just before bed.

Ambien and Alcohol

Do not consume alcohol while on Ambien or other forms of zolpidem.

Alcohol can worsen side effects, such as drowsiness and abnormal thoughts or behaviors.

Within 7 to 8 hours of taking Ambien or other forms of Ambien, do not perform activities that require mental alertness or coordination, like operating machinery or driving a car or truck.

Some people using this medicine have engaged in activity such as driving, eating, walking, making phone calls, or having sex and later having no memory of the activity.

General symptomatic and supportive measures should be used. If there is no advantage in emptying the stomach, activated charcoal should be given to reduce absorption. Sedating drugs should be withheld even if excitation occurs.

Use of flumazenil may be considered where serious symptoms are observed. Flumazenil is reported to have an elimination half-life of about 40 – 80 minutes. victims should be kept under close observation because of this short duration of action; further doses of flumazenil may be necessary. However, flumazenil administration may contribute to the appearance of neurological symptoms (convulsions).

Ambien is not dialyzable. The value of dialysis in the treatment of an overdose has not been determined. Dialysis in people with renal failure receiving therapeutic doses of Ambien has demonstrated no reduction in levels of Ambien.

In the management of overdose with any medicinal product, it should be borne in mind that multiple agents may have been taken.
